Associate a unique hand signal and tone with the command. "Site" the dog then move the treat to the ground just in front of the nose. Praise the dog lavishly. So, the dog hasn't evolved to understand why you're hitting them. That way a dog associates the behavior with the command. You want the dog to associate the position with good feelings - his and yours. When you see it give a unique voice command and hand gesture pair. Hold off on food treats until you really need them.If the dog backs up do the technique near the couch or a fence where he has nowhere to go.With a treat or toy, face the dog and place it above his head and slightly behind the forehead, but still visible. Don't be harsh, but don't give up easily either.Lets get one thing carved in stone right away - Dogs are not hairy fluffy kids. But if these are not the results you desire, be prepared to change YOUR behaviour, before you try to alter the dog's. Watch and catch them in the middle of sitting and say 'sit' and gesture. Dogs can be amazing at understanding spoken communication. To start take advantage of spontaneous behavior. Praise and reward anyway, even though you had to 'force' the sit. It's totally counter-productive and won't help anyway. Now bring out other techniques.. It instills fear, not trust. - Believe that the dog can associate consequences across time and conditions, then draw the same conclusion you would. It also leads to behaviors like 'rollover' and 'crawl'.When the dog is in position, praise lavishly even though you executed the movement not the dog.Make the hand gesture, issue the voice command and move a treat or toy from the dog's chin to the ground while pulling gently on the leash. Beyond the need to establish that you are the alpha (leader), it has a number of benefits.Fortunately,"Down" is usually easy to train. You have to be geared up to repeat the same order, day in and day out, and occasionally not get the same outcome. It also has practical benefits. Simultaneously, gently take both the dog's forelegs and pull toward you, issuing the voice command. It seems it should be obvious - they've done the action with success many times before - but today they are just 'being obstinate'.- Get impatient and frustrated when they don't behave as you want them to. But that's reserved in the wild for only the most severe circumstances.First, take advantage of the dog's spontaneous behavior.Part of that patience means keeping your temper when you would like to lash out physically. When a dog sits he's more attentive, making it easier to follow commands. At first the dog will have no idea why it's being praised but it doesn't matter as with repetition the behavior will follow the command.Dog Training - Sit Command - Few behaviors are as fundamentally important as 'sit'. Physical punishment just isn't an effective training technique. It's easy to use physical punishment as the first route of correcting a dog's behavior. When the behavior is complete, praise lavishly. But dogs tend to be happy when the alpha is, and upset when he is. But they don't reason out or get context the way humans do. But dogs make choices very differently from people. There are alternate explanations for their behavior. As a result, it can be frustrating to repeat the same command over and over, only to have the dog apparently ignore
Wikipedia on dog beds
Dog agility is a dog sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. Dogs generally run off-leash with no food or toys as incentives. The handler can touch neither dog nor obstacles, except accidentally. Consequently, the handler's controls are limited to voice, movement, and various body signals, requiring exceptional training of the animal.
In its simplest form, an agility course consists of a set of standard obstacles, laid out by an agility judge in a design of his own choosing on a roughly 100 by 100 foot (30 by 30 m) area, with numbers indicating the order in which the dog must complete the obstacles.
Courses are complicated enough that a dog could not complete them correctly without human direction. In competition, the handler must assess the course, decide on handling strategies, and direct the dog through the course, with precision and speed equally important. Many strategies exist to compensate for the inherent difference in human and dog speeds and the strengths and weaknesses of the various dogs and handlers.
